Introducing Simon Vibert
I am an ordained minister in the Church of England. I believe that ministry is primarily about teaching and living by the bible. God revealed Himself in history in His Son, Jesus Christ, who John calls "the word made flesh". God continues to reveal himself today through His living Word, the Bible. We connect to God by hearing and heeding His word.
This has been the ministry which I have been involved in for the last 18 years. However in July 2007, after Church based work in Carlisle, Buxton and Wimbledon, I took up a new post at Wycliffe Hall Oxford as Vice Principal. My particular responsibility is to set up the School of Preaching to better equip a new generation of Christian Ministers with the joy and privilege of making the living word known through the preaching of the written word. See www.wycliffe.ox.ac.uk.
I am married to Carrie and father of Naomi, Daniella and Jacob, and Grandfather to Grace (Naomi's daughter). I was Vicar of St Luke's Church, Wimbledon Park, but moved in July 2007 to become the Vice-Principal of Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. Part of this new job will be to set up a Preaching School which reflects my own vision for preaching. Controversy over the changes in direction at Wycliffe Hall have reached the national press. Richard Turnbull has written an article about the changes at Wycliffe for the Guardian newspaper
My final reflections on parish life in Wimbledon and preparations for work in Oxford may be read here Amazing Grace
I grew up in the beautiful island of Jersey and became a Christian in my late teens. I spent a formative year working as a junior staff member at St Helen's Bishopsgate, a church in the heart of London's financial district, and it was there, under Dick Lucas' ministry, that I first really felt that God continues to speak today when the Bible is simply retold and applied in a contemporary manner. I had a short career in Natwest bank in Jersey before going to theological college to train for ordination.
I met Carrie, whilst at Oak Hill College where I completed my training for ministry. Further study has involved a M.Th. in New Testament from Glasgow University, and a D.Min from Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando Florida. The subject of my thesis was the teaching of Dr. John Piper. Much of my book on Christian marriage (see below) is based on my D.Min. research.
I am the author of several articles and books. I contributed chapters to The Encyclopaedia of Bible Characters, The Way Forward (ed Tim Bradshaw) and the recently published Pulpit Journeys (Ed Geoffrey Stevenson).
My third book 12 Things Good Preachers do Well is soon to be published by IVP (expected Easter 2011).
I have been Chairman of Fellowship of Word and Spirit, and author of several of their publications. This group, formed in 1984, has a vision to be a fellowship of local church leaders providing each other with encouragement and support in applying the Bible systematically and radically to every area of life, in the power of the Holy Spirit. I am a trustee of the Latimer Trust. and I am on the Exec of the Church of England Evangelical Council.
I am a Langham Trainer , this is an international partnership which has been set up out of respect of and appreciation for Dr John Stott's preaching ministry. I have led seminars in Kenya, Tanzania Serbia and Croatia (December 2007)
