John Piper Book Reviews
Mind on Fire:
A Faith for the Skeptical and
Indifferent
From the works of Blaise Pascal
Ed. Dr. James M. Houston
Multnomah Press 1989
Overview
Blaise Pascal is best remembered as a brilliant mathematician whose
intellectual contributions continue to be part of computer programming today!
However the translation of Pensees written in the seventeenth century
reflects his philosophical thinking following His conversion to Christ at the
age of 31.
The book is a series of disconnected reflections and letters on intelligent
faith, particularly in the light of his own physical sickness.
Critique
The translation of this book has helped to bring order to what would
otherwise seem to be a disconnected series of thoughts. Os Guinness’
introduction to the life of Pascal is very helpful.
Application
Pascal’s desire to have a reasoned, passionate faith has influenced John
Piper, and in turn influenced me too.
Best Quote
"All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different
means they employ, they all tend to this end. The cause of some going to
war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with
different views. The will never takes the least step but to this object.
This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang
themselves." (thought #425)
